The Hockey Sweater

The Hockey Sweater will come to life at SaskTel Centre on the afternoon of Sunday, March 15, 2015, with a live performance of the orchestral adaptation of the beloved story by Roch Carrier. The Hockey Sweater performance will take place on ice for the first time, with music provided by the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, narration courtesy of Mayor Don Atchison and illustrations from the book featured on a lowered scoreboard. This unique event will be followed by festivities courtesy of the Saskatoon Blades, including autograph sessions and interactive games, skating on the SaskTel Centre ice, and other events featuring music, books, sport and more.

The Hockey Sweater gained fame almost as soon as it was published by Roch Carrier in 1979. The National Film Board then adapted it into an animated short. The story is based on Carrier’s experience growing up in Sainte-Justine, Quebec, as a fan of the Montreal Canadiens and its star, Maurice Richard. Carrier and his friends all wore Canadiens sweaters with Richard's 9 on the back. When he needed a new one, he was mistakenly sent a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. Forced to wear it by his mother, Carrier faced the persecution of his peers and was prevented from playing by his coach.

The Hockey Sweater is an iconic work of Canadian literature and exemplifies the nation's passion for hockey. The partners in this event look forward to celebrating both culture and sport.
